LAKES REGION
The Lakes Region of New Hampshire is steeped in history. In fact in recent years we are seeing history repeat itself. In the latter half of the 19th Century and the early part of the 20th Century the Lakes Region was a popular resort area frequented by people from all along the East Coast and especially the Boston area. Trains left Union Station in Boston and traveled to Laconia where local connections were made to the Boston and Montreal Railroad line that traveled from Laconia to Alton Bay, and the Concord & Montreal line that connected Laconia to Meredith, Lake Waukewan, Winona Lake and beyond. Steamboats made connections at Weirs Beach to Center Harbor, Long Island in Moultonboro, Wolfeboro and Alton Bay. Vacations then consisted of a stay at one of the grand hotels around the lake not for a weekend, or a week or two, but for a summer. Wealthy families had their own "cottages".

Several sections of the map are enlarged as well to show some of the detail.
In the 20th Century train travel gradually dwindled and tourism in the Lakes Region suffered. Many of the old hotels were either torn down or they succumbed to fire. The population in the area declined and the region really wasn't discovered again until the modern highway systems were developed. Populations in the towns around the lake increased and in the last decade or so actually surpassed the population levels of 1900.
And once again the Lakes Region has become a popular vacation destination, not just for summers this time, but year round. Hotels are returning. Larger and larger "cottages" are being built. Even the Weirs Times has been revived by the Lawton family of Funspot fame. The map is there as well, but the advertisements have changed. History repeats itself.

At the height of this period an entrepreneur named Matthew Calvert created a newspaper for the tourists called the Weirs Times and Winnipesaukee Gazette.
It featured news from around Lake Winnipesaukee and the region. The main attraction of the paper was the centerfold which consisted of an area map that filled two pages of the paper.
[

It was surrounded by advertisements of numerous businesses.

The map shown here is a copy of that map that appeared in the Weirs Times in the 1890's.
